President Muhammadu Buhari has warned Nigerians against self-defence in the face of attacks, saying that they must wait for the government to do the needful instead of resorting to self-help.
Mr. Buhari stated this while reacting to the recent raids on communities by bandits in Katsina State at the weekend.
About 30 people were said to have been killed during the attack on Saturday. The police has reportedly made some arrests.
Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, quoting his principal said the president warned against self-help or revenge.
Mr Shehu in a statement on Sunday said the president advised that authorities should be allowed to investigate any security breach.
“No one in the country has a right to take laws into his hands by the way of self-help or revenge,” the president said.
“Local communities that catch bandits should hand over the suspects to law enforcement authorities instead of meting out capital punishment, leading to a cycle of revenge and counter revenge.
“The authorities must be allowed to investigate and deal with any breach that occurs. There is no place for violence in a decent society,” he added.
