Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has clarified his involvement with the late General Sani Abacha's regime.
According to Obi, he never met Abacha until he and other importers approached him in the 1990s to address prolonged delays in clearing goods at Nigerian ports.
Obi emphasized that their meeting was driven by collective concern as traders and importers, not as political actors, seeking pragmatic solutions to economic issues affecting livelihoods.
Key Points of Obi's Explanation:
- Meeting with Abacha: Obi stated that he had never met Abacha before their encounter, which was initiated by traders and importers concerned about port delays.
- Civic Duty: Obi insisted that his actions were driven by civic duty, not political ambition, as they sought to resolve economic issues affecting the nation.
- Taskforce Involvement: Obi released letters documenting his co-opting into the Taskforce on the decongestion of the Ports, highlighting his role in addressing port congestion.
- Evidence: Obi provided evidence, including an official appointment letter from 1996, to support his claims and dispel allegations of working with the Abacha regime .
Obi's clarification comes amid heightened political debates and attempts to scrutinize past affiliations ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections.
